Day of the Alpargateras Golondrinas

Between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, hundreds of girls from the valleys on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees would go across the mountains to work in the Alpagata or espadrille factories in France. They made the journey on foot at the beginning of October and returned at the end of May or beginning of June. They were popularly known as the "Golondrinas" or swallows, given that their journeys coincided with the migratory movements of these birds.

To draw attention to this small part of Pyrenean history and to showcase the country dances, traditional costumes and the culture of the valleys of the western Pyrenees, a full historical re-enactment is staged in the beautiful village of Isaba, set in the heart of the Roncal valley. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the customs and history of this unique and beautiful spot in Navarre.
