Transhumance in Bardenas Reales

In mid-September the area of El Paso of the Bardenas Reales Nature Reserve near the town of Carcastillo becomes the venue of a very curious event, the Sanmiguelada. Thousands of sheep in the company of their shepherds walk for several days from the Pyrenean valleys of Roncal and Salazar to the Bárdenas Reales.

This landscape shaped by hills, ravines and raised plains becomes the home of the flocks that will graze on the Bárdenas pastures in the autumn and winter months. This ritual forms part of a transhumance cycle that has been repeated since the Middle Ages and which attracts thousands of visitors every year. In addition to the spectacle of the animals spreading out at dawn over this natural space, the encounter is complemented by sessions for tasting breadcrumbs, chistorra sausages, and wine. On the occasion of this historic event in Carcastillo moreover, the Festival of Traditional Customs and Transhumance is also held in Bardenas.
