"El Volatín" in Tudela

Tradition is set to be fulfilled once again with this celebration declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest, whose origins date back to the distant 14th century. On Holy Saturday, at 10 in the morning in Tudela’s Plaza de los Fueros, you can attend this unique event which symbolises the agonising death of the traitor Judas Iscariot, who handed Jesus over to his enemies for just a few coins.

A wooden figure with articulated limbs, dressed for public mockery, with a firecracker-cigar in his mouth and resigned to his fate waits for the wick to be lit. With frenetic movements, he begins to spin relentlessly until his suit and footwear fall in tatters into the crowd.
