Señorío de Bertiz: feel the heartbeat of the forest
On the banks of the Bidasoa river, between the Malerreka valley and the Baztan valley, very close to the Bay of Biscay, sits the little valley of Bertizarana. And in one of its villages, Oieregi, there is a dense, colourful forest where nature and legend become one. This wild space has at its entrance a beautiful garden decorated with delicate modernist and Art Nouveau motifs.
It's called Señorío de Bertiz and it’s a place so full of magic that were you to walk its paths and stumble across a lamia, you wouldn’t be at all surprised.
Lamias, by the way, were sirens who travelled the rivers, singing and combing their hair with golden combs. According to legend, their job was to protect the forests of the Bertizarana Valley.
And it would seem they did a good job because Señorío de Bertiz is a well preserved forest of outstanding biodiversity that you can explore and enjoy to your heart’s content.
Bertiz: a bit of history and protecting it
Bertiz is a unique place both for its natural beauty and its history. Did you know that it was the first Natural Park declared in Navarre? It gained the status in 1984, fulfilling the wishes of its previous owners, Pedro Ciga and Dorotea Fernández, who bequeathed their property to Navarre under the condition that it was kept as it was, without changing any of its natural characteristics.
Evidently, Pedro dearly loved his natural surroundings and was eager to recover the typical forest environment of the valley. And thank goodness he did, because thanks to this and the current protection status of the park (which is also part of the Natura 2000 network, which includes the finest conservation spaces in all of Europe), we can now enjoy one of the most spectacular beech forests on the Iberian peninsula.
It should come as little surprise then that the park’s 2,040 hectares are home to great treasures, among them beech, oak and alder forests inhabited by animals such as red deer, row deer, wild boars and a wide range of birds.

The gem of the park: the Historic-Artistic Garden
The botanical garden, which is more than 100 years old, is the jewel in the crown of the park. There you can make a sensory journey through species from different parts of the world — sequoias, cedars, ginkgoes, lemon trees, camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisterias and bamboos — in a delightful, romantic, Art Nouveau-style setting dotted with ponds, bridges, arbours and viewpoints.
Don’t miss the amazing modernist stained-glass windows in the veranda built onto the chapel, a reference point in the conservation of historical stained-glass windows. Discover on this page the importance of light in Bertiz and its stained-glass windows.
Right there, next to a large fountain with water lilies, stands Bertiz Palace, and next to it, the Nature Interpretation Centre, which we encourage you to visit.

All the information provided by computers, models, interactive games, real materials and photographs will reveal to you the wealth that the park conceals in a truly enjoyable, educational manner.

The Network of trails
The network of trails in the park consists of 7 routes with different levels of difficulty that take you deep into the heart of the forest.
You can choose between short, easy walks, such as the 1.5 km from Bertiz to the beautiful stone bridge and the Palace of Reparacea in Oieregi, or more complicated routes, like the one to the Palace of Aizkolegi, a summer palace, now in ruins, located at a spectacular viewpoint; but here we’re talking about a 22-kilometre hike with an elevation gain of 680 m.

Donamaria tower
In Donamaria, 8 kilometres from Bertiz, there stands an enigmatic Gothic tower. Elegant and austere, it still has the defensive features of the typical mediaeval towers found in Navarre and is one of the best examples of civil architecture from the period still standing. The tower is well known because the first two floors are in stone, while the next two are made of wood. A stop well worth the trouble, that’s for sure.

Discover Ituren and Zubieta and their joaldunak
Marking the end of winter and the onset of spring, the carnivals in the pretty villages of Ituren and Zubieta have become symbols of how Navarre's rural carnivals and ancestral rituals have survived.
The stars of the event, the joaldunak and the bear, aim to scare away evil spirits and awaken nature with the huge cowbells they carry on their backs, creating a harmonious sound that can be heard throughout the valley; a magical moment.
But carnivals aside, these villages are well worth a visit or a walk along the Water route trail.
