Navarre is a land so diverse in its landscapes, culture and gastronomy that it’s barely conceivable that such a small place has so much to offer. So when you visit, there are surprises every step of the way and everyone who comes to spend a few days here is eager to come back. If Navarre is still on your to-do list, we've selected 7 places you need to visit to start your love affair with a land with a thousand years of history, a land of true tradition and deep roots.

Blog

1. THE SOURCE OF THE UREDERRA RIVER WILL LEAVE YOU SPEECHLESS

If you want to be amazed by a river with turquoise waters, you have to come to Navarre! Urederra, in Basque, means "beautiful water". To get to this lush beauty spot, you have to go to the village of Baquedano. From there, there’s an easy path with some 90 metres of elevation gain covering the 6 kilometres odd there and back.

To see the source, you need to book on the official website because there’s a daily limit on visitors.

2. THE IRATI FOREST, THE GREAT FOREST IN THE NAVARRESE PYRENEES

If what you need is a forest bath, this is the ideal place to immerse and renew yourself. The more-than-17,000 hectares of this great beech-fir forest make it one of the largest and best conserved in Europe. There’s also a multitude of possibilities for hiking, whatever your level.

3. BARDENAS REALES, A DESERT LANDSCAPE OF EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY

Did you know that Navarre is home to a desert just 70 km from the Pyrenees? Yes, you read that right. And you've probably already seen it in a series, film or commercial. The Bardenas Reales Natural Park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a place of magical geological forms where you’ll feel like you’re on another planet. There you can find places where there is only pure silence, or the whistling of the wind.

4. OLITE, LOST IN A FAIRYTALE

Now we’re going to one of the most important places in the old Kingdom of Navarre: Olite.

There you’ll find Olite castle-royal palace, where the kings and queens of Navarre once lived. Now it’s one of the most striking Gothic castles on the continent and one of the most attractive places to visit here and show off on your social networks.

Olite is also known for its historical association with the world of wine, so don’t hesitate to visit one of its wineries when you go.

5. ZUGARRAMURDI AND ITS WITCHES

In an idyllic landscape where cows graze in leafy meadows, very close to France, in the north of the Baztan valley, sits Zugarramurdi, the famous "village of the witches". The village consists of beautiful houses built in the traditional style of northern Navarre and a typical Pyrenean street system, all overlooked by the Church of la Asunción. Zugarramurdi is famous for its imposing caves, where it’s easy to imagine what the akelarres (witches’ covens) held there were like in other times. If you want to find out more about the past of the people living here, don’t hesitate to visit the Witch museum.

6. THE GORGE OF LUMBIER, A DEEP CHASM WITH AN ACCESSIBLE RAIL TRAIL

The Irati river and the passage of time sculpted these impressive cliffs, now home to eagles, griffon vultures and a wide variety of birds that you can watch with your binoculars. Crossing this nature reserve is extremely easy. You just have to follow the route of the old railway line, now a rail trail; an accessible path for everyone and ideal for kids.

7. BAZTAN, A VALLEY WHERE GREEN STEALS THE SHOW

Imagine you’re in a peaceful rural setting of soft green hills, cows grazing in lush meadows, brooks with crystal clear waters and stone farmhouses, centuries old and with colourful flowers adorning their windows and balconies. Such a place exists and is waiting to be enjoyed any time of the year. It’s the Baztan valley, where you can visit picturesque villages, historical sites such as Amaiur/Maya castle or legendary waterfalls like Xorroxin.

This is just a compilation of some of the places that surprise those who visit us, leaving them with delightful memories. So, if you have a few days where you can get away from it all, Navarre gives you the chance to travel through a diverse land which has so much to offer. We look forward to seeing you!
