Azoleta-Xatanerreka

The area around Valcarlos combines nature, tradition and beautiful views. The trail winds through oak, beech and majestic chestnut trees, surrounded by riverside vegetation and caseríos (farmhouses).

The starting point is next to the fronton (pelota court) near the church, from which you ascend towards the Azoleta district. After leaving the paved road behind, the trail continues with a steep climb that leads to a small bridge over a brook.

As you climb, you can see the farmhouses of Azoleta dotting the landscape, lending it a truly rural feel. After crossing a fence, the path reaches Satan Erreka, a shady spot where two wooden bridges cross a brook and the cool air offers respite from the summer heat.

The trail continues to the Chapel of María Magdalena; the way back to the village is a gentle descent, perfect for enjoying at a leisurely pace.
