Balcón de los buitres

This trail along the old Plazaola railway line combines history and nature, and includes a viewpoint to observe griffon vultures on the twin cliffs of Dos Hermanas.

The route skirts the slopes of the Dos Hermanas crags, a stunning landscape sculpted by the erosion caused by the Larraun river.

The route begins in Irurtzun on the esplanade of the old Plazaola railway station, where there is an information panel. It enters some oak woods until it reaches the summit of Allegain, a natural viewpoint with excellent views of Irurtzun. The path overlooks Balcón de los Buitres (Vultures’ lookout), where
you can admire the long, narrow Sakana valley and watch these unique birds in flight. The way back down winds through the Orazulo woods to the foot of these imposing crags. Finally, the return journey follows the Plazaola rail trail, passing through one of its tunnels back to Irurtzun.
