Three Wise Men Mystery Play

If there’s a magical morning on the 6th of January anywhere in Navarre, then it’s in Sangüesa. Every Epiphany, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar leave the Palace - Castle of the Prince of Viana on horseback along with their entire entourage to recall their journey to Bethlehem in verse. They soon stop in Jerusalem (Ongay  Vallesantoro palace), where they are received by King Herod. After leaving Jerusalem, guided by the star, they arrive in Bethlehem (Plaza de la Abadía), where they join shepherds, shepherdesses, shepherd boys and shepherd girls, who sing and bestow gifts upon the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

​​​​​​​The play, declared a Festival of Local Tourist Interest in Navarre, is one of the 5 autos sacramentales (dramatic representations) of its kind still held in Spain and has been performed since 1900.
