Palomeras

This trail runs along the ridge between Sara and Etxalar, an area of great historical and natural value, once a haven for smuggling and pigeon hunting in autumn. In Lizaieta, there’s a bird monitoring centre and in Usategieta, information panels about the local fauna and environment.

The route begins at Alto de Lizaieta (on the French-Spanish border) and ascends along a track to Xorilepo saddle. From there, the path splits between the main track (the return route) and a narrow stretch of the GR-11 longdistance trail, passing over Usategieta saddle and continuing through age-old oak trees and past livestock sheds.

Further on, the trail climbs to Nabarlatsa saddle and continues along a panoramic forest track with views of the Basque coastline before finally returning to the starting point.

This trail combines nature, history and birdwatching, offering a complete and enriching experience for hiking enthusiasts.
