The Pyrenean valleys
Navarre is located just a few kilometres from the Bay of Biscay and occupies the western end of the Pyrenees, but it also has a continental area in the south; so, in practically no distance, you can enjoy a wide range of climates and landscapes. To the north, a territory of peaceful mountains awaits you, punctuated with beautiful caves and gorges, with cosy rural houses in picturesque villages which have managed to carefully preserve their architecture and traditions. Surrounded by centuries-old oak and beech forests such as Irati or Bertiz, you’ll discover a thousand trails to explore on foot or by bike. Here you can also try delicious grilled meats, mushrooms, cheeses and liqueurs.
Pamplona and the Way of Saint James
The traditional French Way of St James enters Spain through the legendary Roncesvalles before crossing the rolling lands of Central Navarre, leaving astounding Romanesque and Gothic monasteries, churches and bridges in its wake. And nearby there are fairytale castles like the ones in Olite or Javier. The Way also passes through Pamplona, world-famous for its San Fermín festival but a no less friendly and hospitable city the rest of the year. Green, walled, a university city with a great cultural life and a lively old town where you just have to try some of the traditional pintxos.
Vegetables and desert
Continuing south, you’ll find olive groves and vineyards, where wines with the Navarra Designation of Origin are crafted, the fertile market gardens where the famous peppers, artichokes and asparagus of the Ribera are grown, and something totally unexpected, an extensive protected natural space which you would never dream of finding at these latitudes: the Bardenas Reales desert.
