Holy Week in Corella

Holy Week in Corella is full of emotion and fervour, and the high point is Good Friday because two very important religious celebrations are held:

  • The staging of the ‘Función de las Siete Palabras’ (Performance of the Seven Words)at midday in the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
  • The Procession of La Pasión de Cristo. In the evening, the streets of Corella provide the backdrop for a splendid procession. The imagery of the pasos (processional floats) represents scenes from the Passion of Christ, and different biblical characters come back to life for a few hours. Corella’s is a solemn Baroque procession dating from the 18th century which was declared a Procession of Tourist Interest in 1967 as one of the fifty most characteristic and original processions in Spain. The most representative acts include the ‘Entry into Jerusalem’ and the ‘Arrest’, but the high point of the drama is, without doubt, ‘Christ meeting Simon of Cyrene and Veronica’.

Despite the great crowd which congregates for the staging, an overwhelming silence reigns, only augmenting the emotional intensity of the event.
