Irantzu River canyon

Abárzuza
Tierra Estella (Urederra)
Ruta Senderista
Distance 4.52 km
Difficulty Baja
Elevation gain 107.0 m
Route type Linear

This trail crosses areas of grazing land and oak and beech trees, going around the strange rock formations carved by the river and pools with crystal-clear waters.

This linear route begins at Irantzu monastery, next to a stone cross, and gently ascends the Irantzu river canyon between crags and brooks, with Peña del
Águila
to the left and Peña de Irantzu to the right.

The route, which combines sections of concrete and stone, clearly shows the effects of river erosion. Before walking the first kilometre, the woods become a dense beech forest before oak trees and the first beech trees of Urbasa finally appear. After crossing the river and carrying on to a second intersection to admire an imposing age-old oak tree, the route ends at a spot known as Esquina de Elke.
