Navarre is not just the entry point of the Way of St James. It's also - luckily - a land of many paths. Proof of this are the thousands of kilometres of trails, paths, rail trails and tracks, so you can get into nature and get away from it all!
A countryside that is splashed with colour. Because Navarre is a land of diversity, and each of its landscapes comes with its own particular shades. That's another thing that we're lucky about.
And listen up! Yet another good thing about our land is that there's something for all levels of experience and fitness. There are a host of options open to you, ranging from pleasant walks for all the family right up to climbing the peaks of the Pyrenees. That's to say 2,000 metres, which isn't exactly high-altitude climbing.
So, as you can see, there's no end of options. Bring your family, your partner, your group of friends or whoever you want. And, if anything, let your legs set the limits.

GRANDE RANDONNÉE or GR LONG-DISTANCE ROUTES IN NAVARRE
Come on, this is a suggestion for the really brave! The GR Routes. Walks that are at least 50 kilometres long, which often cover a number of regions.
But don't panic! If you don't think you're up to doing 50 kilometres, then you can do sections of these routes, going to a particular point and then coming back the same way. That's not so bad!
Six GRs wind their way through Navarre - so you've got plenty of choice for a great adventure.
-
GR-11 Pyrenean Route
From the Cabo Higuer (Basque Country) to the Cabo de Creus (Cataluña), the 800 km Pyrenean route crosses right through the Pyrenees. 170 kms pass through Navarre, divided into 8 stages through the valleys of Bidasoa, Baztan, Aezkoa, Salazar and Roncal.
-
GR-12 Euskal Herria Route
At present, only the section in Navarre is maintained.
Here, 190 kilometres await you across the mountains, between the Cantabrian and Mediterranean basins. Think about what a route through the Pyrenees is, as you'll need to plan for completing stages in uninhabited places.
-
GR-20 Loop around the Sierra de Aralar
A 120 km loop trail shared between Navarre and Gipuzkoa. This is the ideal option for walkers who are also enthusiastic about culture and legends, given that the trail is packed with dolmens, histories of dragons and has a stop at the centuries-old Sanctuary of San Miguel In Excelsis.
-
GR-220 Loop around the Pamplona Basin
Another loop trail of almost 114 kilometres, encircling the valley of Aranguren and Pamplona. We would recommend doing it in a clockwise direction, giving you more options to complete the states in places with facilities.
-
GR-225 Escape from the Fortress of San Cristóbal
A 53 kilometre route connecting mount Ezcaba with the French locality of Urepel. With a high level of difficulty, it follows the steps of the prisoners who escaped from the Fort of San Cristóbal, on the outskirts of Pamplona, during the Civil War.
-
GR 321 Royal Trail - Roncal Valley
Also known as the Camino Real Roncalés or Royal Roncal Trail, it stretches 37.1 kilometres between the Burgui gorge and the coll of Arrakogoiti on the border with France.
Mountain climbing
One, step, another step, a stop to drink. Raise your head and see the peak so close, so far away. Another step up the slope, and another, and another. Your companion urges you on. And complete satisfaction, when you finally reach the top. There you are, at the top of the mountain, with those sensations of power and happiness that invade your body.
Yes, we know. Climbing mountains is an energy kick. And in Navarre, you can get quite a few. Just take a look at the really tempting peaks here:
-
Mesa de los Tres Reyes (Table of the three kings) —2.444 m—
The top of Navarre, a mountain in which the kingdoms of Aragón, Bearne and Navarre merge into one.
-
Peña Ezkaurre —2.045 m—
A circular track leads to the top, in the heart of the Pyrenees.
-
Pico de Ori (Ori peak) —2.017 m—
A climb with some breathtaking views of the Pyrenees.
-
Climb up the Adi —1.459 m—
A gentle climb amid beech trees and meadows in the Forest of Quinto Real.
-
Summit of the Saioa —1.442 m—
One of the most iconic peaks in Navarre.
-
Montejurra —1.040 m—
A viewpoint of the Central Area of Navarre, surrounded by box woodlands and loaded with Carlist history.
